🧔♂️ The Story of Prophet Nuh (AS) – The Preacher of Patience and the Great Flood
Prophet Nuh (Noah, عليه السلام) is one of the greatest messengers in Islam. He was among the Ulul Azm — the five greatest prophets known for their perseverance and unwavering faith. Sent to a society lost in idol worship and moral decay, Prophet Nuh (AS) spent over 950 years calling people to the path of Allah. His story is one of patience, struggle, and divine justice, ending with a great flood that cleansed the earth.
🌍 The People of Nuh (AS) and Their Corruption
After the time of Prophet Adam (AS) and his descendants, people began to stray from pure monotheism. They started worshipping idols, including figures named Wadd, Suwa’, Yaghuth, Ya’uq, and Nasr — all once-righteous people whom the people wrongly began to revere as gods after their deaths.
This marked a severe shift in human behavior. Instead of worshiping Allah alone, they turned to false gods, committing acts of injustice, arrogance, and corruption.
“They have said: ‘You shall not leave your gods, nor shall you leave Wadd, nor Suwa’, nor Yaghuth, Ya’uq and Nasr.’”
— Surah Nuh (71:23)
🕋 The Call to Tawheed (Oneness of Allah)
Allah sent Prophet Nuh (AS) to guide his people back to the truth. His message was simple:
“Worship Allah! You have no god but Him.”
— Surah Al-A’raf (7:59)
With kindness and compassion, Nuh (AS) warned his people of Allah’s punishment if they continued in disbelief. He used every method to reach their hearts — public preaching, private conversations, day and night reminders. Yet most people mocked him, rejected him, and plugged their ears.
“My Lord! I have called my people night and day, but my call only increases them in flight.”
— Surah Nuh (71:5-6)
😢 The Rejection and Mockery
Instead of listening, his people laughed at him. The leaders and wealthy elites accused him of being mad and weak. They looked down on his followers, who were mostly poor and humble believers.
“And every time I invited them... they put their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their garments, and persisted in arrogance.”
— Surah Nuh (71:7)
Nuh (AS) patiently endured their insults for centuries. Only a small group of believers accepted his message. According to narrations, less than 80 people followed him after more than 950 years of dawah.
🛶 The Command to Build the Ark
At last, when all hope was lost in the guidance of his people, Allah revealed to Nuh (AS):
“None of your people will believe except those who have already believed.”
— Surah Hud (11:36)
Allah then commanded him to build a massive ark (ship). Despite having no experience in shipbuilding and living far from any sea, Nuh obeyed.
As he worked, the people mocked him relentlessly:
“He is building a ship on dry land! What a madman!”
But Nuh (AS) replied with dignity:
“If you mock us now, we will soon mock you just as you mock us.”
— Surah Hud (11:38)
🌧️ The Great Flood
When the ark was complete, Allah instructed Nuh to bring into the ark pairs of every animal species, along with his family and the believing followers.
Then came the divine command:
“When the oven gushes forth (with water), embark therein...”
— Surah Hud (11:40)
Rain poured from the sky and water gushed from the earth. A mighty flood overwhelmed the land — higher than mountains. It was a universal disaster, wiping out the disbelievers completely.
“And it was said: ‘O earth, swallow your water! O sky, withhold!’ And the water subsided, and the matter was concluded.”
— Surah Hud (11:44)
💔 The Tragedy of His Son
One of the most painful moments was when Prophet Nuh (AS) saw his own son, a disbeliever, drowning. Nuh called out to him:
“O my son! Come aboard with us and do not be with the disbelievers.”
— Surah Hud (11:42)
But his son refused, saying:
“I will take refuge on a mountain to protect me from the water.”
To which Nuh replied:
“There is no protector today from the decree of Allah except for whom He has mercy.”
A wave came between them, and his son drowned. Nuh (AS) was devastated, but Allah reminded him that faith, not family, determines salvation.
🕊️ The Ark Comes to Rest
After the earth was cleansed, the ark came to rest on Mount Judi.
Nuh (AS) and his followers stepped off the ark to a new beginning — a new humanity rooted in belief. He was the second father of mankind, and all humans today are descendants of his surviving followers.
