[🧠] The Story of Prophet Idris (AS) – The Truthful Prophet and the First to Write

🧔‍♂️ The Story of Prophet Idris (AS) – The Truthful Prophet and the First to Write

Prophet Idris (عليه السلام), known as Enoch in the Bible, holds a distinguished place in Islamic tradition. He was a prophet of truth, wisdom, and perseverance. While the Qur’an mentions him only briefly, Islamic narrations and authentic traditions portray him as a noble man — the first to write with a pen, a teacher of wisdom, and a role model of patience and devotion. 🕊️

📜 Who Was Prophet Idris (AS)?

Idris (AS) was a descendant of Prophet Adam (AS) through his son Sheeth (AS). Some reports say he was born 100 years after the death of Adam. His name comes from the root word "dars", which means "to study" or "to instruct", and he was called Idris because of his devotion to studying and teaching.

He is one of the earliest prophets mentioned in Islamic history and is deeply respected for his intellect and spiritual strength.

“And mention in the Book, Idris. Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet.”
— Surah Maryam (19:56)

✒️ First to Use the Pen and Study Science

Prophet Idris (AS) was the first human to use the pen. He recorded knowledge, taught people how to write, and introduced many aspects of civilization that are still relevant today. According to Islamic tradition, he was the first to:

  • Write with a pen ✍️

  • Teach astronomy and mathematics 🌌

  • Develop skills in tailoring and sewing 👕

  • Encourage people to reflect and gain knowledge 📚

He balanced spiritual devotion with practical knowledge, setting a foundation for both worship and progress.

🕌 A Life of Worship and Wisdom

Idris (AS) was known for his deep devotion to Allah. He spent much of his time in worship, fasting during the day, praying at night, and calling others toward monotheism (tawheed). He was also a just leader, guiding his people with fairness and kindness.

His wisdom earned him great respect among his people. Unlike many prophets who faced resistance, Idris was honored and followed by many in his community.

“And We raised him to a high station.”
— Surah Maryam (19:57)

This verse is interpreted by scholars to mean that Idris was physically raised to the heavens — a unique honor granted to only a few.

🌟 The Ascension of Idris (AS)

One of the most fascinating aspects of Idris's story is his ascension. According to authentic Islamic narrations, he was taken up to the heavens while still alive. In a hadith from Sahih Muslim, during the Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) Night Journey (Al-Isra’ wal-Mi’raj), he met Prophet Idris in the fourth heaven.

The story goes:

"Then I passed by Idris and he said, ‘Welcome, O righteous Prophet and righteous brother.’”
— Sahih Muslim

Many scholars believe that Idris (AS) was honored by being raised to the heavens because of his righteousness and high status among prophets.

👥 His Mission and Message

Like all prophets, Idris (AS) called people to worship Allah alone. He reminded them of their duties, taught them how to live moral and disciplined lives, and guided them to goodness. His key teachings included:

  • Belief in one God (Tawheed)

  • Living righteously and avoiding sin

  • Honesty, patience, and truthfulness

  • Using knowledge for good

  • Preparation for the afterlife

He was also known to warn his people against greed, pride, and turning away from the truth. His legacy emphasized action, not just belief.

📚 Legacy of Knowledge

Prophet Idris (AS) left behind a legacy of wisdom and knowledge that would influence generations after him. He was the first prophet to introduce writing, making it possible to record revelation, laws, and sciences.

His contributions helped preserve knowledge and helped humanity advance in ways that were divinely inspired.

🪦 Death of Prophet Idris (AS)

While the Qur’an does not detail his death, many Islamic scholars believe that Idris (AS) did not die on earth, but rather was raised to a special place in the heavens. Some even consider him to be among those who will return near the end of time — though this is a subject of differing interpretations.

Regardless, his memory remains as that of a prophet of truth, intellect, and piety.
